Construction starts continue to decline in Q3

Construction activity continued its decline, with Glenigan revealing the value of project starts under £100m declined 8% in the three months to October.

As a result, construction activity in general remained 10% lower than the levels at the same point last year.

Within this, residential activity declined by 7% during the third quarter and leaving this 9% below 2024’s levels.

The decline was uneven within the residential sector.

Private housing construction starts only dipped 5% against the preceding three months and by 10% against the previous year. In contrast, social housing starts dropped 13% against the preceding three months to stand 7% lower than the previous year.

“After the declines seen in recent months, the October Index reveals that starts remain subdued,” said Allan Wilen, economic director at Glenigan.

“Private housing starts drifted lower as apartment developments face delays in gaining BSR approval.”
